13th Penal Legion Patrol

A 400pt Imperial Guard patrol.

The patrol is led by Commissar Warden, equipped with a bolt pistol and power fist. He is pictured below.

The first squad is a Hardened Veteran squad, 'The Deserters'. Four Veterans led by a Vet Sergeant. They are armed with las guns, 1 bolter and two melta guns. They ride in a standard chimera with multi-laser and heavy bolter.

The second squad, 'The Skulz', is an armoured fist squad. 9 guardsmen led by a veteran sergeant. They are equipped with a las cannon. This squad is also mounted in a standard chimera, with multi laser and heavy bolter

Jeff says that their strengths lay in mobility, long range fire power, and the front armour of the chimeras. I would add the Ld of a Commissar must help a great deal.

Their weaknesses lay in the overall size of the patrol being pretty small and their lack of ability in hand to hand combat. This patrol was sent to me ages ago, possibly before the release of the latest codex. In the new codex I total this force at 387 points, which would allow Jeff to take another Hardened Veteran, every little helps.

This is an excellent example of a themed force. It enables Jeff to justify taking a commissar, who must be itching to execute any further wrong doers. Indiscriminate use of characters like commissars, just to get a good stat line is frowned upon, in this case however who else would be trusted to lead a group of penal troops detached from a main force?
