Can I make changes to the standard lists e.g. arm tactical marines with storm bolters? I don't see why a squad could not be armed with irregular weaponry when going on patrol, as long as the choices are reasonable, storm bolters would appear ok in this department to me. This is an unofficial set of rules and how you play your games is up to you. My normal rule of thumb is to consider whether it seems reasonable for that change to be made, will it upset balance and is it in the spirit of the game. I like the idea of long range patrols developing idiosyncratic forms of equipping themselves, it seems right that they would be experienced troops who would 'tool up' as they felt necessary. However to be on the safe side I would discuss any alterations to the standard selection processes with my opponents before springing it on them in a game.
